What is a Baby Shower?
A Baby Shower is an American tradition of throwing a party for the mum-to-be, to
celebrate the imminent arrival of her precious bundle of joy and it’s usually
only attended by female friends and relatives.
Baby Showers are really taking off in the UK and the celebrities are setting the
trend. Stella McCartney hosted a lavish Baby Shower Party for her three
pregnant friends, Kate Moss, Sharleen Spiteri and Sadie Frost who were all
expecting at the same time. The celebrity guest list was impressive and each
guest could be seen arriving at Stella’s Notting Hill mansion clutching gifts
for the expectant ladies.
What happens at a Baby Shower?
The main aim of the party is to have fun and give the Mum–to-be chance to relax
and enjoy herself after months of hard work growing that bump! Its also a good
opportunity for friends and relatives to offer words of wisdom and
encouragement.
It’s a good idea to give each guest a name badge to wear as they arrive there is
bound to be somebody there who doesn’t know everybody and it will help with
playing the games if everybody knows everybody else’s name.
Once everybody is relaxed and has a drink in hand it really breaks the ice and
gets everybody giggling if you play a few games. We will send you a
selection of game ideas with everyorder placed.
After a few games everybody will have worked up an appetite so let the nibbling
begin! You could have a finger buffet or just keep it simple with bowls of
nibbles & dips it’s up to you.
After everybody has refuelled you could play another couple of games then
towards the end of the party its really nice to gather round whilst the
mum-to-be opens her gifts. You don’t have to do this but it all adds to the
excitement as she unwraps babygrows, mittens and booties. Just listen to all
those broody women Ooohing and Ahhhing at all those tiny cute things!!
It’s a good idea if a friend sits close by with a pen and paper as the mum-to-be
opens her gifts and makes a quick note of who bought what. It helps when
writing all those thank you notes! It’s also a nice keepsake for the baby’s
memory box so that in years to come baby can see who came to the party and who
bought what.
Who throws a Baby Shower?
Quite often the party is organised by someone close to the mum-to-be, eg her
Mum, Sister, best friend or work colleague. However it’s perfectly OK to
organize your own Shower Party, just enlist a few people to help out.
